Social stories explain social situations to autistic children and help them understand how to behave in situations. Social stories were initially developed for use with autistic children. They’re also useful for other children with learning or intellectual disorders and can be especially useful for first time bus riders so they know what to expect on their way to school, and back home.
How to use these social stories:
- Find a quiet place to read the social story with your child.
- Use positive statements like “I can” or “I will” to tell children what they will do.
- Read the story with your child multiple times before their first bus ride.
- Revisit the story after to reinforce what they should do.
