First Student’s Diversity & Inclusion Council (D&IC) is proud to recognize Helen Schultz during Women’s History Month.
In 1922, Schultz launched the first woman-owned bus line, Red Ball Transportation. Her company ran bus routes between Charles City, Iowa and Waterloo, known as the Red Ball route.
She faced many challenges including regulatory matters, opposition from the railroad industry, low ridership, breakdowns, and biases because she was a woman. Schultz overcame all of this and was known nationwide as “Iowa’s bus Queen.”
