2 First Student team members honor breast cancer awareness month

October 6, 2016

In October at Troy, Michigan’s Location #12609, two team members are visible in more ways than one; they wear bright pink high-visibility vests to help raise awareness of breast cancer.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month in the United States, which is an annual campaign to increase awareness of the disease. Breast cancer is one of the leading health crises for women in the US. One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime making it the most common cancer among women in the US (other than skin cancer). But millions of women are surviving the disease thanks in part to early detection and improvements in treatment.

“Leslie Ballard and Erin Benson have worked together and been friends for more than 20 years. Leslie supported Erin when she went through her own battle with breast cancer 12 years ago. They both support Erin’s niece who is currently battling metastatic breast cancer. The vests keep them visible, in more ways than one,” said Location Safety Manager Matt Benson.

Area General Manager Doug Meek approved the pink vests for the month of October, and according to Matt, they are a big hit with the other drivers as well.

“I expect to see more drivers wearing them in the coming days. It is great to show support for such a worthy cause,” Matt added.
