Back to school will be more challenging this year for a variety of reasons. Reworked school routines, new transportation protocols, social distancing and thorough disinfecting will be necessary responses to the novel coronavirus outbreak.
We developed our Start Safe Program by pulling leaders from every function within our organization to follow through on our commitment to providing the safest transportation for our students and employees. The Safe Start Program will help districts know they have the best protocols in place and respond to parents who are concerned about putting their children on a bus this fall.
Team of Experts
First Student developed the Start Safe Task Force to effectively manage our response to the COVID-19 pandemic at our bus depots and support our district partners as we collectively work to promote the health and safety of our student passengers and bus personnel.
This team is driving the charge to reduce disease exposure and prevent transmission throughout our operations. As such, they collaborated with governmental agencies, health care organizations, university research teams, and vehicle manufacturers to test and share information about:
- Virus dwell time
- Virus reaction
- Decontamination methods
- Instantaneous disinfection
- Prolonged environment protection
First Student Start Safe Taskforce
First Student’s Start Safe Taskforce is comprised of 20+ senior-level leaders from each function within our organization
This research underpins our cleaning protocols as well as our best practice recommendations for the industry.

Disinfected and Protected
First Student offers two bus disinfection products for our buses:
- Zoono Z71™ Microbe Shield Antimicrobial
- Signet® Neutral Disinfectant DS1
First Student’s antimicrobial option is Zoono-Z71™. We selected Zoono-Z71™ because it provides strong, long-lasting antimicrobial protection against a range of bacteria, viruses and pathogens.
Zoono is different because when applied, it leaves behind a molecular layer that bonds to surfaces and fabrics. These molecules form a barrier of microscopic spikes that (through ionic action of negatively and positively charged particles) attract, pierce, and prevent pathogens.
The long-lasting protection provided by Zoono-Z71™ disinfectant makes it ideal for school transportation environments.
*Zoono-Z71™ is EPA-Registered #83129-1 (List A – Antimicrobials) and Pending EPA List N approval
Signet® Neutral Disinfectant DS1
If the district prefers daily disinfection, First Student has chosen Signet® Neutral Disinfectant DS1 due to its non-corrosive effect on school buses. The solution is an EPA-registered disinfectant that is bactericidal, viricidal, fungicidal and meets the OSHA Bloodborne Pathogen standard for decontamination of blood and bodily fluids.
Start Safe Toolkit
This fall, you will need to communicate about the safety of the school bus environment. In addition to our standard back-to-school tool kit materials, we compiled all of our best practice protocols and developed new resources for you to share with your parents and the community.
