Those who knew 35-year-old, New Haven, CT Police Officer Robert Fumiatti called him a hero, and on Saturday, January 13, a half a dozen First Student school buses carried more than 100 of Fumiatti’s fellow officers to his funeral and burial.
Officer Fumiatti—who survived after being shot in the head during a drug raid four years ago—died unexpectedly January 10 from a rare inflammatory heart disease.
In 2004, after a long-recovery, Fumiatti returned to duty, inspiring all of those around him who saw him persevere despite his injuries and excel in spite of adversity.
“Officer Fumiatti is a true hero in every sense of the word,” said Jim Castelli, Senior Region Vice President, First Student. “We’re grateful that we could assist in some small way in honoring the memory of this amazing man who leaves behind a legacy of an officer’s unwavering commitment to his community.”
More than 1,000 family members, friends and fellow officers attended officer Fumiatti’s funeral.
