Two Quick-thinking First Student drivers, Michael Garcia and Challell Turner, from Location #20969 in Yermo, California were recently recognized for saving the life of a student who stopped breathing outside of their bus After unloading students from their buses at Silver Valley High School, Garcia and Turner noticed an unresponsive student lying on the ground. Garcia noticed that the student was bleeding and not breathing, so he cleared the airway passage while Turner ran to her bus to retrieve the first aid kit and contacted emergency personnel. The Location, school district and the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department recognized Michael Garcia and Challell Turner at a special recognition ceremony where a certificate was presented for their courageous act. All new First Student drivers are prepared for most emergencies – medical, collision, bus evacuations, and severe weather conditions. But unlike most states, school bus drivers in the State of California are also required to take an approved first aid training course, administered by the California Highway Patrol, and to pass a written exam. “I am extremely proud of the action of both drivers,” said Location Manager Alessia Morris. “People can be first aid and CPR certified, but when push comes to shove, it takes special people to jump into action and take charge of the situation. Michael and Challell did just that.”
