Shuttle Helps “Back-to-School Shop” Volunteers Make a Difference

August 12, 2016

First Student drivers from our Stamford, Connecticut location provided shuttle service for volunteers participating in the community’s Back-to-School Shop program. The program was organized by the United Jewish Federation and Stamford Public Schools. Back-to-School Shop. Stamford, Connecticut

The event provides at-risk students in Stamford with brand new items for back-to-school. When children arrive at the event they are paired with a “personal shopper” who takes them to each station to “purchase” what they like. There were on-site changing rooms so the children could try on the items to ensure a proper fit.

Parents are taken to the cafeteria where they can meet with different community agencies and programs to get assistance with heath care, childcare, legal services and more. Each family was given a free smoke detector by the Stamford Fire Department. A fire truck and ice cream truck were on site, too.  The program grew so much from last year that there was not ample parking. The more than 150 volunteers parked off-site and were shuttled by First Student drivers.

School officials, including the new superintendent, assistant superintendent and Board of Education members were in attendance. Additionally, representatives from the mayor’s office and state representatives were on hand.
