Some 795 million people in the world do not have enough food to lead a healthy active life, according to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization. That’s about one in nine people on earth. All it takes is just for one person to step forward and hear the call for action. That’s just what Dispatcher Shantrell Lewis from Location #25061 in Harvey, Louisiana did in December. Shantrell, with the help from three team members, coordinated a food drive to feed the less fortunate in the central business district (CBD) of New Orleans. She also received support from her co-workers by collecting more than $700 in monetary donations to help purchase food for the drive. On Saturday, December 17, Shantrell along with 15 teammates, prepared the food and then drove to the CBD to set-up tables for the drive. That day, Shantrell and her co-workers fed almost 100 people a dinner of turkey, ham, seafood pasta, baked chicken, macaroni and cheese and baked beans. The dinner was capped off with a variety of pies and cakes for dessert. Beside the dinner, team members also distributed care packages that contained hygiene items. “It’s a great feeling to know I work with such incredible people who have a heart for helping people in our community,” said Location Manager Cory Young. “Their compassion and dedication to people in our community who are experiencing homelessness, is truly remarkable.”
