Fundraising efforts raise more than $5,000 for wildfire victims

July 21, 2016

First Student employees from across Eastern Canada came together and made a difference for their fellow team members whose lives were impacted by the terrible forest fires in Fort McMurray.

On Saturday, June 18, a yard sale, BBQ and bake sale was held at a driver’s home. Driver Sandy Bond, also a member of the location’s Employee Committee, priced the yard sale items and organized the bake sale. Sandy and her team devoted more than three days to pricing of all the donated items.

In total, nearly 25% of St. Thomas’ team members participated in the event. Many donated items for the yard sale, baked items for the bake sale and volunteered their time for the June 18 event. In addition to employees, many spouses, children and other family members participated, too. Windsor, Ontario’s Location Safety Manager Brad Handford, made the two-hour drive to support the event.

Overwhelmed with the support of the community, nearly $5,500 was raised to support the Fort McMurray community.

“Other individuals hosting yard sales in the community sent residents to the First Student yard sale! I could not be more proud of the wonderful team I have in St Thomas, and the commitment they made to help out our fellow employees in their time of great need,” said Location Manager Janice White.
