DriverScore informs data-driven coaching conversations which leads to safer driving

One of the main concerns for parents and school administrators is the safety of their students. First Student completes 5,000,000 home to school journeys a day and employees 10,000 bus drivers. Developing tools to help keep your students safe and your operation running smoothly are at the core of everything we do at First Student.

Driving Safety Further

First Student developed DriverScore to further our industry leading safety record. DriverScore was created with both drivers and safety coaches in mind and has been a huge success because of its simplicity and visibility.

Drivers are given a score of 1 to 5 stars, with 5 being the best, on 4 key metrics. Data analytics have shown that these 4 metrics have the greatest impact on overall safety and also help to improve our environment.

  • Hard Braking
  • Rapid Acceleration
  • Speeding
  • Idling

How DriverScore Works

The DriverScore program uses GPS to pinpoint each of these occurrences on a map and the data is delivered to our safety staff. Location staff use the data, maps, and trends to coach drivers in a more meaningful way and promote positive reinforcement where drivers are recognized for their safe driving.

DriverScore metrics are delivered on a mobile tablet that shows when and where incidents occurred, when drivers were coached and the driver’s improvement after the coaching session

More Than a Score

DriverScore is changing our driver’s behaviors in a positive way. The program has boosted moral, created more camaraderie, and has sparked friendly competition amongst drivers as their scores are visible for all to see. Drivers are not only motivated to complete safe trips but to earn and maintain a high personal score. All our drivers want to earn the title “5 Star Driver.”

“The effect of DriverScorehas been pretty amazing. The drivers celebrate and they talk about it, so you hear the conversations, ‘am I on the scoreboard again?’ Everyone likes to be acknowledged for a job well done.” – Alvia Lopez, Driver
