First Student Honors Top Performing Locations with Environmental and Safety Awards

CINCINNATI First Student, North America’s leader in student transportation, recently presented its sixth annual environmental and safety awards to its top performing locations. At its North American Safety Conference in Baltimore, the company recognized the outstanding efforts of employees who have gone the above and beyond in improving environmental and safety performance, while supporting the company’s vision of “keeping people moving and communities prospering.”

Environmental Team Achievement Award, presented to the location that reduced the largest percentage of their carbon footprint for the year:

  • Sandy, Ore. – Location decreased electrical consumption by 4 percent, and also increased solid waste recycling to 20 percent.

Operations Team Safety Achievement Award, presented to the location with the best overall safety performance for the year:

  • Lawrence, Kan. – Location had zero passenger or staff injuries for the second consecutive year, plus zero avoidable collisions for the year.
  • Dundalk, Ontario – Location had zero passenger or staff injuries plus zero avoidable collisions for the year.

Engineering Team Safety Achievement Award, presented to the location with the best safety records for a maintenance team:

  • Naperville, Ill. – First engineering team at First Student location to achieve a Lean Shop “Gold” Wrench, an internal measure that exemplifies maximum efficiency as well as top safety performance.

Outstanding Individual Contribution to Safety Award, presented to the employee who displayed courage and dedication while providing service to their customer:

  • Shop Manager Todd Edwards and Service Manager Kevin King, Middle Island, N.Y. – Both employees rescued a First Student driver and three student passengers after their bus became stuck in the snow in Suffolk County, N.Y. in February.
