Tennessee 2021 Superintendent of the Year

Bryan Johnson

Bryan Johnson is a native of Nashville and attended Austin Peay State University, majoring in business administration and played football. He received his master’s in teaching from Belmont University and has a doctorate from Trevecca Nazarene in educational leadership. Johnson attended public schools himself and has served as a teacher, school administrator, director, chief academic officer and now as the Superintendent of Hamilton County Schools. Mr. Johnson has been making great strides in improving Hamilton County Schools by starting the Opportunity Zone to improve 12 of the district’s lowest performing schools. He also launched Future Ready Institutes in the high schools to help teens make learning more meaningful and provide graduates preparation for success after graduation. Each student at the middle schools were provided an electronic device to become 1-to-1 technology schools.

About the Award:

The Superintendent of the Year program, sponsored by First Student and AASA, The School Superintendents Association, pays tribute to the talent and vision of the men and women who lead the nation’s public schools.

The 2021 Superintendent of the Year will; be awarded at the National Conference on Education on February 18th, 2021

The National winner of the award is chosen from the four finalists who are selected from state level winners.

State level winners are selected on the following criteria:

  • Communication
  • Professionalism
  • Community Involvement
