Itasca, IL – New Castle, Pa., is now accredited as a Safe Community by the National Safety Council nbsp;through its Safe Communities America program. The presentation will take place Monday, February 23, at noon at the Conference Center of Jameston Hospital South, 1000 S. Mercer Street, New Castle, PA.
New Castle is the third community in Pennsylvania to achieve accreditation and the 26th Safe Community in the United States. Safe Communities America is a proven approach to injury reduction, structured around a broad coalition of partners including businesses, local government, civic organizations and residents. The program recognizes communities making a commitment to safety and improving the quality of life for their residents.
“It’s wonderful to see New Castle stepping up to address its safety concerns head-on” said Deborah Hersman, president and CEO of the National Safety Council. “The city has shown its dedication to keeping safety on the forefront and is on a path to continuous improvement as a Safe Community.”
The accreditation is a culmination of a year-long effort to identify and address the leading causes of injury and death in New Castle, a community of more than 20,000 residents. Some of the key intervention strategies include implementation of elderly fall-prevention programs, emergency preparedness services and crisis assistance.
First Student, the industry safety leader in providing student transportation services in North America and previous recipient of the Council’s Green Cross for Safety Medal®, provided leadership and financial support to the community coalition for the accreditation process.
