School Bus Safety Tips

At First Student, safety is a driving factor in everything we do. In order to help students and drivers have the safest possible bus ride, we’ve put together helpful safety tips. Reviewing these passenger safety tips is a great way to make sure students arrive to school and return home safely each day.

  1. Be aware of moving traffic.
     
  2. Leave plenty of time to get to the bus stop. Don’t rush.
     
  3. Pay attention to your surroundings; listening to your iPod or playing handheld video games may lead to distractions and potential injury.
     
  4. Don’t wear a hood as it makes it more difficult to hear and see traffic.
     
  5. Stay at a safe distance from the street and don’t play around, when waiting for the bus.
     
  6. Stay 10 giant steps away from the outside of the bus while the bus is pulling up so the driver can see you.
     
  7. Wait for the bus to stop completely before you move towards it to get on, or before you stand up to get off.
     
  8. Be cautious of clothing or backpacks with drawstrings, toggles or key chains that can get caught on bus handrails and doors.
     
  9. Hold the handrail going up and down the stairwell so you don’t trip.
     
  10. Find a seat and sit down as soon as you’re on the bus.
     
  11. Be courteous and respectful to your driver. Listen to directions.
     
  12. Don’t put your head, arms, papers or anything out the window.
     
  13. Don’t pick up anything you drop near the bus. The driver may not see you. Instead, ask the driver for help.
     
  14. Wait to cross the street until the driver lets you know it’s OK.
     
  15. Stay away from the bus wheels at all times—the driver cannot see you!
